OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE
APP is recruiting a Peer Support Facilitator to work across two innovative collaborative projects in the North West region: with Cheshire & Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (CWPFT) providing peer support to inpatients at Seren Lodge, the new Mother and Baby Unit (MBU) in Chester; and with Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust (LSCFT) providing peer support at the Ribbemere Mother and Baby Unit (MBU) in Chorley as well as in the community in Lancashire and South Cumbria.
This is a 4 day per week role. Your time will be split between:
- Seren Lodge MBU in Chester, where you will support women one-to-one and through small group activities. You will also spend time talking to partners and families of women during the acute illness phase and signposting to APP’s online support, community forum, and information.
- Our Lancashire and South Cumbria project, supporting women and family members at Ribblemere on discharge from the ward, and with the specialist community perinatal teams across Lancashire & South Cumbria, which may include support in pregnancy for women at risk of PP. You will also arrange cafe groups for recovering and recovered women with experience of PP in the region.
You will have experienced postpartum psychosis yourself, and will use your experience to offer peer support, information and signposting to women and families affected by postpartum psychosis. You will build and manage a team of regional volunteers who have recovered from PP, as well as help to manage data collection and evaluation of the projects and manage the workload of casual (sessional) workers who will cover your annual leave. Your excellent interpersonal skills, understanding of postpartum psychosis, knowledge of the principles of peer support; and experience of supporting others will help APP improve recovery outcomes for women, partners and families in the North West region.
CASUAL PEER SUPPORT WORKER (NORTH WEST)
APP is also seeking a casual peer support worker or workers with lived experience of postpartum psychosis (PP) to provide peer support to women and families affected by postpartum psychosis in the North West region. The casual peer support worker(s) will support women and families at Seren Lodge MBU, Ribblemere MBU in Chorley and in the Lancashire & South Cumbria community; and participate in awareness raising activities, events, and health professional training. Casual peer support workers may also have opportunities to work on APP’s partnership project with Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust.
APP is the national charity providing support and information to mums and families affected by postpartum psychosis (PP), a severe form of postnatal mental illness that develops, often out of the blue, in the days and weeks following childbirth. APP works with women, families, academics and specialist clinicians to: raise awareness of PP; develop information; train health professionals; facilitate research; and runs an award-winning specialist peer support service.
